The Conservancy believes in the power of connecting people to nature. Our events are designed to give participants a unique view of lands we protect and an understanding of why they matter. We also work to instill the value of natural places in our community to raise up a human support structure for the earth here in the Inland Northwest.
Join volunteer hike docent Chris Moore us for a special guided hike through the beautiful Waikiki Nature Preserve in north Spokane!
This guided hike will explore the environments of Waikiki nature area through the lens of “environments on the edge.” Throughout geological and human history this area has been dynamically shaped by forces that are products of the areas occupying various edges.
Examples include the areas being on the outer edge of the massive basalt lava flows that created the Channeled Scablands and the Columbian Basin (around fifteen million years ago); the lands lying under the southern reaches of Glacial Lake Columbia, which played a large and underrated role in the famous Missoula Ice Age Floods (twenty to ten thousand years ago); and up until one or two hundred years ago, the Little Spokane River being the final destination for forty to sixty thousand migrating salmon each year—salmon that trekked to the river to spawn and, in the process, supercharged local food webs.
This will be an easy three-mile hike with stops along the way to learn about the special history and potential futures of a profoundly changed and changing natural area.
