Join volunteer hike docent, Rick Hosmer, who will lead a hike at Liberty Lake Cedar Grove January 10th starting at 10 am. Rick has been hiking and enjoying the outdoors since his childhood exploring the central Cascade Range with his dad and grandfather. Backpacking trips on his path to becoming an Eagle Scout, led to an interest in mountaineering and rock climbing. He has ascended most of the Cascade volcanoes and scrambled to the tops of many peaks throughout the Pacific Northwest.
This is a wonderful winter hike along Liberty Creek to the Cedar Grove Conservation Area. The land exhibits a combination of flat, rolling hills and various tree and shrub species. It ranges from heavily timbered habitats (including cedars!) to those that include thicker brush and lighter timber. Acquisition of this property preserved habitat for white-tailed deer, bear, elk, cougar, beaver, and native trout while protecting the Liberty Lake watershed area from urban development.
On the way, we’ll chat about INLC’s involvement in protecting the land, the Native and pioneer history of the area, the Spokane-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer; what makes Liberty, Hauser, and Newman Lakes unique; and local wildlife.
Dress for the weather and temperature with a warm hat and windproof shell, and bring plenty of water and snacks for the trail and a break at the cedar grove. It is likely that the trail could be snowy or icy in January, so bring/wear gaiters, microspikes and trekking poles.
Happy Hiking!
