Events

The Conservancy believes in the power of connecting people to nature. Our events are designed to give participants a unique view of lands we protect and an understanding of why they matter. We also work to instill the value of natural places in our community to raise up a human support structure for the earth here in the Inland Northwest.

John C Pointner/Cougar Bay Hike

Sandy Emerson

Join hike docent Mark Merhab and conservation historian Sandy Emerson for a guided hike through Cougar Bay Nature Preserve on Saturday, May 16, starting at 10 am. The trail follows the shoreline of Cougar Bay, offering sights and sounds of diverse waterfowl and aquatic wildlife, then winds through fir, tamarack, and pine forested slopes to a beautiful viewing platform overlooking the bay and the city of Coeur d’Alene.

This 3-mile hike includes approximately 400 feet of elevation gain on the way to the viewing platform. Portions of the trail feature dense natural vegetation, so insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended.

A shorter, alternative route will also be available, led by Sandy Emerson. This option focuses on water habitats and waterfowl viewing, with a turnaround at the well-known stranded dozer before returning along the same path.

This hike offers a great opportunity to experience a beautiful natural area on the northwest side of Lake Coeur d’Alene while engaging in conversation about the importance of land conservation and the work of Inland Northwest Land Conservancy.
