The Conservancy believes in the power of connecting people to nature. Our events are designed to give participants a unique view of lands we protect and an understanding of why they matter. We also work to instill the value of natural places in our community to raise up a human support structure for the earth here in the Inland Northwest.

Join hike docent Mike Harcarik on Saturday, March 1, for a guided hike through Saltese Uplands starting at 9 am. For nearly 25 years Mike managed REI stores and became an avid outdoorsman, taking up rock climbing, canyoneering, mountain biking, trail runs and triathlons, watersports, winter sports, and even yoga!
At just under 4 miles, this is a moderate hike at a comfortable pace, but does have an elevation gain of roughly 600 ft. Early March can see weather ranging from snow to sunny 60+ degree days so this hike will require attention to real-time forecasts.
As any hike requires, please plan on bringing:
– sturdy shoes
– light daypack with water and snacks
– sunglasses and sun protection
– rain/wind jacket (it is often windy due to the open nature of the space)
– cold-weather layers (as needed) including hat and gloves
– first-aid kit
– hiking poles (optional, but recommended)
– phone/camera
Saltese Uplands provides a number of rewards for its users. Easy access, moderate hiking, amazing views, open space and skies, diverse wildlife habitat, local history and the conservation success achieved in protecting this amazing space.
Wildlife – any trip could bring a surprise, but commonly seen wildlife includes owls, bald eagles, songbirds, swans, deer, badgers, coyotes and more.
History – from recent developments back to the late 1800’s and the area’s namesake Chief Andrew Saltese of the Coeur d’Alene tribe!
Conservation – originally slated to become a golf course and housing community, INLC along with supporting organizations like Spokane County Parks & Public Works divisions, collaborated to protect and create this amazing spot. The area helps create clean drinking water for users of the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer and includes the Doris Morrison Learning Center and “No Child Left Inside” program, connecting students with the history, use, care, and restoration of the area.
