Events

The Conservancy believes in the power of connecting people to nature. Our events are designed to give participants a unique view of lands we protect and an understanding of why they matter. We also work to instill the value of natural places in our community to raise up a human support structure for the earth here in the Inland Northwest.

Paths Toward Belonging: Hike III

A Philosophical Hiking Series with INLC & EWU – Hike III — Attunement & Embodied Awareness

Join EWU Philosophy students, led by philosophy professor and hike docent Chris Kirby, for the third hike in our spring Paths Toward Belonging series. This walk turns our attention toward attunement and embodied awareness, inviting participants to slow down, notice, and listen more closely to the landscapes we move through. Focusing on perception, movement, and responsiveness, the hike explores how philosophical reflection can be practiced not just through ideas, but through the body in motion. Participants are welcome to join this hike on its own or alongside others in the series—each outing offers a distinct way of learning how to move, attend, and reflect within living systems.

Theme: Attunement & Spontaneity

Reading: The Dao of Hiking (various excerpts)

Philosophical Focus: This hike shifts from cognition to perception and practice. Daoist philosophy reframes conservation not as control, management, or domination, but as attunement, responsiveness, and harmony.

This hike answers: “How should we move within these systems?”

Participants learn that ecological ethics is not only policy and theory — it is how one walks, watches, listens, and responds.
