The Conservancy believes in the power of connecting people to nature. Our events are designed to give participants a unique view of lands we protect and an understanding of why they matter. We also work to instill the value of natural places in our community to raise up a human support structure for the earth here in the Inland Northwest.

Please join volunteer hike docent Liz Melville and birding expert Alan McCoy from Spokane Audubon Society on Monday, June 8th, for a birding hike around the James T. Slavin Conservation Area.
For Liz, Slavin holds a special place in her heart. Over the years, she has explored its trails on many hikes and discovered unforgettable moments watching wildlife — from Cedar Waxwings and Tree Swallows to her favorite, Northern Flickers. One of her most memorable experiences was watching baby Northern Flickers peeking out from an old tree while nearby nuthatches nested below, turning the tree into what she describes as “an apartment complex of birds.” She’s excited to share the magic of this amazing place with others.
This hike will be roughly 5 miles long and will take approximately 4 hours, depending on the group’s pace. The route is mostly flat with frequent stops to listen and look for birds and other points of interest, making it an easy to moderate hike.
Please bring binoculars if you have them, hiking boots, mosquito protection, and your curiosity. Since this is a birding-focused hike, dogs will not be allowed. Thanks for understanding!
