The World’s Largest Urban Nature Census Takes Place April 24-27

Join us in documenting the incredible biodiversity of the Inland Northwest. Knowing which species live here helps protect vital habitats and wildlife corridors, guide restoration work, and inform thoughtful trail and forest management.
From April 24–27, we’ll head outside together to observe and photograph the plants and animals around us and contribute our data to the City Nature Challenge, an effort that brings together observations from communities around the globe. Whether it’s a spider on a fence post, a wildflower pushing through a crack in the sidewalk, or a hawk circling overhead, each observation is important.
Why it Matters
Every Observation Tells a Story. Scientists and conservationists need data to understand how wildlife is faring in and around our cities. Where are pollinators thriving? Which native plants are holding on? Are certain species showing up in new places? Your observations feed directly into research that shapes how we care for the natural world. Every photo you take helps build a living map of biodiversity in our region. That knowledge belongs to our community and helps us make better decisions about the lands we’re working to protect.
How to Participate

- Download the iNaturalist app available for Apple or Android.
- In the menu, select “Projects” and join “City Nature Challenge 2026: Spokane County” (Optional: We encourage anyone in the Inland Northwest to participate)
- Photograph wild plants, animals, and fungi in your neighborhood and backyard, on the trail, and at the park.
- Identify: The app instantly suggests an identification, and a global community of naturalists confirms or refines it.
- Your observation becomes open data – used by scientists, conservationists, and researchers worldwide. Share your observations and join the global tally in real time.
