Inland Northwest Land Conservancy is pleased to announce the addition of Maria Vandervert as the organization’s new Director of Communications and Engagement, effective June 9, 2025.
A Spokane native with a background in strategic communications and community engagement, Maria brings over 20 years of experience to her role. She previously served as Director of Strategic Communications at Greater Spokane Incorporated (GSI), where she played a pivotal role in regional business development, branding, and economic advocacy. After nearly two decades at GSI, Maria launched Dragonfly Urban Farm, a no-dig urban farming initiative based in Spokane’s South Hill, reflecting her passion for healthy food systems and sustainable land practices.
Maria’s connection to the Inland Northwest runs deep. “The beauty of this region – the four-season climate, its trees and rivers, and the chance to escape to the lake -has always grounded me,” she says. Her love for nature began in her grandmother’s garden, where she learned early on that caring for the land yields beauty, nourishment, and a sense of belonging.
Known for her creativity and curiosity, Maria is also a roller skater, painter, and avid home gardener. She has a special interest in nutrition science and the relationship between soil health, ecosystems, and human well-being.
“I’m fascinated by all things flora and fauna,” says Vandervert. “Supporting healthy ecosystems supports a healthy life – for people, wildlife, and future generations.”
At the Conservancy, Maria will oversee strategic communications and marketing, coordinate outreach and community partnerships, and support the organization’s land conservation work across Eastern Washington and North Idaho.
